The rain moved in after dark this evening. Our friend Fred came over earlier to have dinner with us. We'd invited him over on Christmas Eve, but a nasty stomach bug kept him away.
But he enjoys a good steak as much as anyone I've ever met, so he came today.
We enjoyed a great meal with him and we sat around talking. We solved most of the world problems, and thought about tackling world peace, but decided it would take a little longer. Thankfully he left for his long ride home before the rain set in.
But that changed a few years ago when our old roof began to leak a little.
We did the math and realized another shingled roof would be cheaper and keep us dry, but we both wanted a metal roof.
After a lot of thinking, we decided on spending the extra money. As fate would have it, the rain dodged our house for months after the new roof went on.
But even so, we'd set our lawn chairs in the back yard and instead of looking down toward the garden, we looked at our new roof.
The function of a roof is to keep you warm and dry. Our roof does that, but it provides a value added function, of soothing your soul on rainy nights, and it's hard to put a value on things like that.
This is not a great picture of our roof, but you get the idea |
So much nicer to awaken to the sound of the rain on a tin roof than to wake up to feeling it on your face. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou ate so right:)
DeleteI love listening to rain when I'm drifting off to sleep... it sounds like the tin roof would sound great ♡
ReplyDeleteIt's hypnotic Launna.
DeleteI need a new roof badly but it will have to wait till next spring. It's not leaking yet but it won't be long. I'd love a metal roof but I worry about the noise keeping me awake at night when it rain. I know, it's weird but I can't sleep when it rains hard.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, the roof sprung a leak and I woke up with the rain dripping in my ear. No wonder I don't sleep well when it rains. It must have traumatized me.

Wow. Your comment made me flench when I read it.
DeleteOne old farmhouse we lived in when I was a child had a tin roof over the porch. It was just far enough away that when it rained it sounded like bacon frying when I woke up in the morning. I would jump out of bed and scurry downstairs for a breakfast of bacon and eggs only to find oatmeal. But then I could hear the rain falling on the tin roof. I spent hours sitting on that porch just listening to the rain fall.
ReplyDeleteIt sometimes makes me think of applause from a crowd.
DeleteAnd here I was believing that you didn't have 'tin' roofs over your way Rick. Most of ours here in Oz are 'tin' (colourbond iron) and there's nothing quite like listening to the drum of a tropical downpour on a tin roof.
ReplyDeleteMost of the houses we lived in as a kid had tin roofs. The ones back then didn't have that pesky insulation, to dampen the sound :)
DeleteThe tin roof was one thing that made me want to spend time at my ggrandpa's house in Toccoa, GA. Ahhh what music to put you to sleep.
ReplyDeleteLove the flow and subject of the entry... We have never had a tin roof.
Thanks Jack. They are delightful.
DeleteI love the sound of rain on a tin roof I find it relaxing but after a while it becomes annoying yeah I know but that is how I am
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of rain on a tin roof. I wanted one when we built this house but it would not have looked compatible with the house itself. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving the very nice comment. I hope you have a very happy new year.
ReplyDeleteJack goes up on the roof to clean the chimney and I was worried a metal roof would be too slippery. I like the look on your home and I know I'd enjoy the sound...Mother Nature's symphony!
ReplyDeleteHome is where your heart leads you...and sometimes that is under a metal roof that creates music when it rains!
