I worked on clearing brush from the hollow behind the house this evening. There was a time when I kept it trim as a lawn, but my old tractor had an issue that was costly to repair, so I let it go for a while. Further, when the storms moved through a few years ago, we lost some trees too big to reach around. Rather than hire someone to haul them off, I chose to have a neighbor drag the trees to the hollow with a Bobcat. Green trees are hard to burn, so I let them dry for a while.
Days turned into months, and months into years. Now the property is a mess. Privets are a menace to society. Birds love the berries, but they can't digest the seeds. So they "dump" the seeds everywhere and privets spread like kudzu except cutting them is harder.
Enough whining. I savaged the privets until the chainsaw ran out of juice and I headed toward the house just as my phone chirped. When I looked at the notification, it was from the Weather Channel, and it said rain would start in about 10 minutes.
I barely got the tools stored in the shed and into the house when I heard the metal roof begin to rattle like a kettle drum. We're supposed to get over an inch tonight. Hopefully, the approaching line of stormes will weaken before they get here. I'd hate to fill the hollow up with more trees.

It has been raining here for a couple of days...March weather, which can be nutty. I love that picture, very moody
ReplyDeleteIt must feel good to get all that work done, and before the rain comes.
ReplyDeleteIf you fill the hollow is it no longer hollow?
ReplyDeleteIt never rains but it pours!!
ReplyDeleteI must say I like your current series of photos which accompany your posts.

You guys were so smart with the metal roof. I love the sound but seldom hear it. Nice to have a phone that tells you if it is gonna rain. Love the picture.
ReplyDeleteLove to hear rain on a metal roof. What app lets you know exactly when the rain will move in? I have weather apps but none alert me that way. My phone needs to be smart like yours. share Thanks.

It's The Weather Chanel app but you have to enable Notifications. It also notifies me of any severe weather.
DeleteIt sounds like you got a lot done before the rain. Your weather warning apps is a great tool to have. Unfortunately, I only have a stupid cell phone and not very techy.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine that those old trees in the hollow would be a great place for snakes to hide. Have a great weekend.

I'm behind in commenting and was sorry to see that storms have come your way. I loved the post with the old pic of you and Jilda and friends. I think if you looked up 1970 in the dictionary that picture would be there! Really made me smile! Jack's in the process of cutting up the black walnut tree branches left behind when our friend took down the tree and hauled off the rest for the sawmill. We'll be having a few bonfires of our own soon. We've had rain and the yard is so soggy that any fires will probably get washed out! Hope your weekend is a good one!
ReplyDeleteAs we were driving to the bank, the skies suddenly got dark, wind bent trees over, and pelting rain hit. Within 5 miles of sunshine, we were using windshield wipers.
