Today I'm smiling. Three years ago, I bought a new iMac. It was my second one. The first one I'd had almost 10 years. It was still working, but it had gotten SLOW.
I expected that the new iMac I bought in 2014 would solve my speed problems. As it turns out, it didn't. And when I tried to upgrade the memory to help, I learned that the memory on my computer was sautered onto the motherboard. That meant that upgrading it was not an option. I said a bad word when I learned this. Actually, I said several.
The last three years, I spent a lot of time watching the tiny Apple processing ball bounce. It seemed to be worse when I was in a hurry. Santa noted the language I used during this time on his naughty list.
Earlier this year, I decided to start saving my mad money that I make from writing and buy a new computer.
This time I went to the Apple store and made them sign in blood that the new computer could be upgraded if it slowed over time. And if it was slow to start with, they would make it good.
A few weeks ago I ordered the new computer and paid cash.
It arrived today and I've spent most of the afternoon transferring my pictures, documents, and movies. I still have a ways to go, but this computer so far is meeting my expectations. It screams.
Jilda is in the guest room wrapping. She's been there several hours. I'm taking all the incoming calls. I fetch water, snacks, and anything else she needs while keeping a distance from those snipping scissors.
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve Eve. I hope you all have a blessed holiday.

Happy Dance Rick - a fast, up to date and NEW iMac!!! I love the Apple Store(s) - the staff are well trained and kind in their help with things (that I should have done years ago but didn't) type of issues. Wishing you the very best time with your family this Christmas. Lucky you on having Jilda to do all that wrapping too.

Wrapping is a trial and a torment for me.
ReplyDeleteI am glad your new computer is meeting expectations.
A very Happy Christmas to you and yours.
Rick, I too have a new computer this week and understand the joys and befuddlements. Today I got into its program settings to make it stay awake longer than 5 minutes while I was away from it and succeeded after only 2 hours --then found I'd picked up a "narrator" function that shouted out every key I pressed. You know, in a way I'm grateful. Since the kids grew up and the house quieted, I had no way of knowing what an kind of idiot I am but this new computer filled the gap. Things are ok tonight but you can read some of my travails on "Trainride of The Enigmas"(12/19/17). Enjoy your new iMac and holidays too --wishing Jilda and you all the best!
ReplyDeleteA very Merry Christmas to you & Jilda!!
ReplyDeleteI've had an Apple laptop for 7 years now and it's still working although two of my sons had to put in a new hard drive for me. I don't know much about computers but this has been a very good one for me and hoping it lasts a while longer. Enjoy your new one! What would we do without them? Sounds like a very Merry Christmas at your house!
ReplyDeleteI have several Apple computers/ laptops. My first one was a computer with a 15in screen and I loved it but in no time the pixels started to burn out on the screen. It gots so bad that it was difficult to use. Apple people didn't want to do anything about it. It was my lost. I then got a MacBoo Pro and after 7 years it slowed down and could not be upgrader anymore, grrr.... now I just bought a new MacBook Air but it had no place to play DVDs, and I had to buy a hub to plug in my external drives. It's very light but I would have like to have the same features as my MacBook Pro.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas, Hugs, Julia
Merry Christmas to you! A new computer always gives me hope that I'll be able to keep it running ~ fast ~ but over time it does slow. I need to go to the Apple store and have one of the geeks help me figure out a few things....I've had this one for 5 years now, and it's still doing OK. I do wish they would allow us to increase the memory though.
ReplyDeleteWhat were the bad words? We like bad words at our house.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Congratulations on finding a computer that screams and for Apple to assure you that it can be upgraded when the time comes, a computer that works properly makes all the difference in the world.
