Staying alive

For most of last year, we could have gone swimming. The weather was hot and dry into December. Not so this year. The temps took a nose-dive just after we replaced our central air and heating system.

We've used our fireplace more this year that we have in years. And on Friday, we had three inches of snow.

The autumn foliage is going fast. Yesterday while we were walking, I came upon this tiny fern growing around and through a decaying limb.

I stopped my stride long enough to snap a picture. While much of the plant life is giving way to winter. This little fern was doing what it could to stay alive.

  1. I know Jilda and Jordan are happy with all that snow! We only got a dusting but I think we're suppose to get some more tonight. Enjoy it and keep it down there..we're just fine up here!

  7. Until the bitter cold hit us, I still had herbs growing on my sun porch but it's a 3 season room with out heat unless the sunshines, then it warms up. I'm almost afraid to look today and see if anything is still growing. I do love the picture of the ferns. It's a miracle of nature that it's alive.

  9. It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! I'm hoping to get one of those electric fireplaces once we move into the chimney-less new house.

  11. It's almost time to throw out the old calendar and it's getting so close to Christmas and I have to admit that I'm not thrilled about having 6 inches of snow on the ground because I fell on the slippery road and hurt my left ankle. It's almost as good as new but not quite. I'm using some more rugged boots with good traction and I'm really cautious about slipping. I've been cold all day and the wood stove is giving some nice heat.

What a cute little fern... Now that little fern is probably a real tough little thing and I would love to see it grow come this Spring.

    Hugs, Julia
