This evening is the eve of my 69th birthday. I've found myself lost in thought today. It rained a good bit, but there were moments.
At one point, I walked outside. I'd bought a bag of parched peanuts the last time I was at the produce store. I took the bag out with a glass of sweet tea and sat on the back steps to think about life and whatnot.
Kodak snuggled in next to me and watched with great interest. I've spoiled him already. I ate a peanut, and I'd give him a peanut. We talked for a long while and he seemed to listen as long as he got a peanut every now and then.
As I reflect back over the years, the thing that's hard to wrap my mind around is how quickly time has passed.
When I was younger, I thought I had a feel for just how precious my time was, but in retrospect, I'm not sure I did.
I've had good times and life has been good to me, but I think I believed that I'd be forever young. Maybe that's how I should have been. There were good times, but I sometimes dwelled on bad times.
But from this vantage point, I wish I had understood then that the Ferris Wheel goes round and round. Some of the time you're at the bottom, but at other times you're close to the stars.

I like the Ferris Wheel analogy - it has a great deal more class than the 'sometimes you are the fire hydrant and other times the dog' which I have heard here.

ReplyDeleteHappy soon to be birthday! You are so right about time. I thought I had a handle on it and now realize I was full of B. S. It also sucks that I feel time seems to be speeding up. We just need to enjoy the picture in front of us. I see an eagle in the clouds with full wing disbursement.

When you get to age 70, you'll start panicking , as you fully grasp the meaning of what the previous commenter has said: "too soon old, too late smart".

The older you get the faster time goes and I think it's impossible for the young to realize just how precious our tijme is. Happy Birthday wishes ! Hope you have a special day and take the time to enjoy each moment of it.

ReplyDeleteVery good thoughts. There are points in our lives we do just sit and think of life. AND YEAH I think we all thought 'forever young'. I think of the famous 'kid' quote to the athlete, "Tell me it ain't so, Joe."

ReplyDeleteYou are still younger than I am. It is sobering to realize our time here is closer to the end. So all we can do is enjoy the time we are allotted. So have a joy filled birthday.
