Caillou

I've been down today. Yesterday was a hard one. Our dog Caillou became ill. The vet suspects a stroke or possibly cancer. We made the decision to put him down rather than subject him to torturous treatment that would only prolong his suffering.

It was too close to the bone to write about last night. Tomorrow I will write my column for Sunday's paper. It will be about Caillou and what he's meant to us the past ten years.

RIP Caillou.

  1. Rick, I am so sorry for you and your family. It's too sad . I know people do everything possible to keep a pet alive, and it will suffer horrid pain. Breaks my heart. Blessings , xoxo, Susie

  2. It's so very hard to do the right thing for these animals that we love. But they depend on us to do just that. Thank you for having the courage to let go.

  3. I am so very sorry. They wind their paws deep into our heart strings and take a piece of us with them when they leave. And thank you for making the decision which caused you and Jilda pain and stopped Caillou suffering any more.

  5. This is very sad and it reminds me of my Katie who suffered a stroke and she didn’t realize what was going on and we also had to put her down. It is a very tough decision even though you know it is the humane one to do. My heart goes out to you and Jilda. I’m glad you have the new doggie who came to you at the right time without you knowing it.

  6. Ah, this is a really tough, tough decision to have to make.

A small animal practice vet once told me people who wanted to prolong the lives of their very sick animals were thinking more about themselves than their animals. She would have wholeheartedly supported your decision.

  9. I know this is a tough loss for you Rick, I'm a bit curious as I never had more than one dog at a time; how are the other dogs taking this? Do they show signs of mourning? I'm sure they were all a close pack.

    1. It’s interesting you asked this. The new dog hasn’t been here long enough to understand, but the two older dogs and my niece’s dog that come here to stay each day while her family works have been pitiful.
None of them have walked with us the last two days.
They lay in the floor and look out the window.

    3. Many years ago when our hound Thoreau died, two of the dogs didn't seem to notice he was gone, but Faulkner mourned. He spent a lot of time on the sofa and didn't want to play. He came around after a while.

  12. Rick, I've very sorry for your loss. It's a big adjustment to make as they feel like family to us. Loosing a precious pet is very heart breaking for the owner and the other pets as well as you have already observed.
    Hugs, Julia
